Sinus Lifts at Arverne Dental

Welcome to Arverne Dental! Our team, led by Dr. Lyuba Taft, is dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive dental care in Rockaway Beach, NY. If you're considering dental implants but need additional support in your upper teeth, a sinus lift may be the best option for you. Here's everything you need to know about the procedure.

What is a Sinus Lift?

The sinus lift procedure, also known as sinus augmentation, involves a surgical process that aims to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw. The surgery is intended to add more bone to support molars and premolars to the jawbone. This is done by lifting the sinus membrane and inserting a bone graft into the newly created space.

Why Would You Need a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift may be necessary for various reasons, including placing dental implants in the upper jaw. The following conditions could require a sinus lifting procedure.

  • Insufficient Bone Density for Implants:

Implant Stability: Dental implant stability requires a minimum of bone to be integrated and function properly. The implants may only be anchored properly if the upper jaw has enough bone height.

Bone Resorption Over Time: The jawbone, particularly after tooth loss, can naturally resorb over time. This reduces the amount of bone available for implant placement.

  • Bone Loss Due to Periodontal Disease or Tooth Extraction:

Gum Disease: Advanced periodontitis can cause significant bone loss surrounding the teeth. When teeth are extracted or lost due to periodontal diseases, bone resorption can be accelerated in the upper jaw.

Bone Loss After Tooth Extraction: The jawbone can shrink or deteriorate following tooth removal, especially in the premolar and molar areas.

  • Maxillary Sinus Anatomically Positioned

Position of the Low Sinus: In some people, the maxillary sinus may extend into the jawbone region, leaving no space for dental implants.

Sinus Pneumatization: As we age, or after tooth removal, the maxillary sinus can expand and reduce the height of the bone.

  • Trauma or Injury:

Bone augmentation may be required in cases of significant bone loss due to trauma or accidents to the upper jaw.

  • Congenital Anomalies:

Some people are born with a smaller upper jawbone. They may need a sinus lift to increase the bone height enough for dental implant placement.

  • Cosmetic and Restorative Needs:

Full-arch rehab: Sufficient bone height is required to achieve the best possible results for patients who need full-arch implants or dentures supported by implants.

Improved Aesthetics of the Face: A sinus lift can provide a youthful appearance by increasing bone height and improving facial aesthetics.

Dr. Lyuba Taft is a specialist in sinus lifts at Arverne Dental. This procedure ensures optimal dental implant outcomes. We can help you if you are considering dental implants or have suffered bone loss in your upper jaw.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Arverne Dental's Dr. Taft and her team follow a process that is meticulous to ensure the safety and success of a sinus lift:

  1. Assessment and Planning: Dr. Taft uses advanced imaging to evaluate your sinus anatomy and bone structure and plan the procedure.
  2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered for your comfort. If desired, sedation options are also available.
  3. Surgical Access: A small incision is made to expose the bone, and then a small opening is created in it.
  4. Sinus Membrane Lift: Gently lifting the sinus membrane creates space for a bone graft.
  5. Bone Grafting: A bone graft fills in the newly formed space and encourages new bone growth.
  6. Closure: The gum tissues are sutured into place, and healing begins.

Recovery and Aftercare

To ensure a successful recovery, it's important to carefully follow your post-operative care plan and attend all follow-up appointments to track your progress.

  • Initial Healing

    Swelling & Discomfort:

    • After surgery, you may experience mild swelling and discomfort, particularly in the cheeks or gums.
    • Applying ice to the cheeks can reduce swelling in the first 48 hours.

    Medications:

    • Dr. Taft prescribes pain medication to help manage discomfort.
    • Antibiotics can also be prescribed to prevent infection.
    • To keep your sinuses open, use nasal sprays according to the instructions.

    Nasal Care:

    • For at least two weeks, avoid blowing your nose and sneezing hard to prevent pressure from being placed on the membrane of the sinuses.
    • Sneeze with your mouth wide open to relieve sinus pressure.

    Diet & Hydration:

    • For the first few weeks, stick to a diet of soft foods. Then, gradually introduce solids as you feel comfortable.
    • Avoid hot and acidic drinks that could irritate your gums.
  • Follow-Up Appointments

    Monitoring Progress:

    • Dr. Taft schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor the healing progress.
    • The appointments include x-rays and scans that confirm the integration of your bone graft with your bone.

    Suture Removal:

    • You may need to remove sutures during your next visit, or they may dissolve by themselves.

    Oral Hygiene:

    • For the first few weeks, brush your teeth gently and avoid the surgical site.
    • To keep your mouth clean, use a mouthwash prescribed by your dentist or warm salt water to rinse.
  • Implant Placement

    Healing period:

    • The bone graft usually takes 4 to 9 months to integrate fully with your bone.
    • The healing time will vary depending on the size and healing capacity of your body.

    Dental Implant Surgery:

    • Dental implants can only be placed after Dr. Taft confirms the graft is integrated.
    • The placement of an implant is usually straightforward, and you'll receive instructions on how to recover after the procedure.

    Final Restore:

    • Once the implants have been placed securely and healed, they will be topped with a permanent crown, bridge, or denture to restore your smile.
  • Long-Term Maintenance and Care

    Regular Dental Check-Ups:

    • Maintain your oral health by having regular dental cleanings and checkups.

    Good Dental Hygiene:

    • Use an antibacterial mouthwash and brush twice daily to maintain healthy gums.

    Healthy Lifestyle Habits:

    • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively impact your oral health.

We at Arverne Dental are committed to helping you recover successfully. Dr. Taft will provide you with personalized care and guidance.
