Have you been to the dentist in the past year? According to statistics, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, only 65% of U.S. adults had seen a dentist for a routine cleaning and dental exam in the past 12 months. And that’s a problem.
Going to the dentist on a regular basis is incredibly important. By visiting your dentist for routine exams and cleanings, you’ll be able to get proper treatment for any issues that have come up and prevent additional problems from developing. Flossing, X-rays, getting fitted for a night guard if needed — it’s all important to maintain good oral health.
We provide the highest quality dental services in Rockaway Beach. Here’s what you can expect from our general dentistry services.
We regularly perform dental cleanings and check-ups for patients in our dental office. Dental cleanings are extremely important for patients of all ages. By visiting your dentist to get cleanings, you’re taking proactive measures to care for your oral health. Good oral hygiene helps prevent issues like cavities and gum disease.
Your oral health is also linked to your overall health. Research shows that gingivitis (a mild type of gum disease) and periodontitis (a serious gum infection)
can contribute
to health issues such as:
Visit our dental office for a cleaning and a routine exam at least once a year — more often if you notice any problems with your teeth (such as tooth pain or bleeding gums).
What happens at a dental cleaning and check-up? First, we’ll examine your teeth and gums to see if anything looks amiss. You might need dental X-rays, too.
X-rays help detect
problems like:
If your teeth and gums are healthy, you may only need X-rays once every couple of years.
The next step in a dental cleaning is to remove the plaque (bacteria) and tartar that may have built up around your teeth. Tartar is mineralized plaque. If you have too much tartar, we may include tooth polishing and debridement in your cleaning. Dental debridements use an ultrasonic scaler to remove the plaque and tartar.
After we’ve addressed the tartar and plaque, our hygienist will brush your teeth using an electric toothbrush. Next, he or she will floss your teeth thoroughly. In some cases, the final step before our dentist comes into the room is a fluoride treatment. Our general dentist will complete the exam by checking your mouth and answering any questions you have.
At your cleaning, we’ll also give you advice on how to care for your teeth at home. We’re happy to answer any questions or provide a demonstration to show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.
If you have any other health conditions, you’ll want to tell us about those, too. Some conditions, such as diabetes and osteoporosis, can affect your teeth and gums.
We can also recommend a good mouthwash brand, or point you in the right direction if you need help to stop smoking (smoking can cause gum disease and oral cancer).
Get the most out of it!

Night guards are removable dental appliances. They’re carefully molded to fit the upper or lower arches of your teeth. Night guards are used to:
If you clench or grind your teeth when you sleep (this is called bruxism), a night guard can help. Clenching or grinding can increase your risk of cavities and potentially cause issues like chipped teeth or jaw pain. A night guard decreases the amount of damage to your teeth.
Our dentist will advise you on whether to wear the night guard on your upper or lower teeth. Many insurance providers and plans cover night guards if your night guard is proven to be medically necessary — so you may be able to get your night guard at an affordable price point.
Here in Rockaway Beach, NY 11693, we create customized night guards for every patient. It’s important to wear a night guard that was specifically made to fit your mouth. You will need to clean your night guard every morning and bring it to your appointments in our dental office so we can adjust things if needed.
It may take you some time to get used to wearing a night guard. Before long, however, most people don’t even notice it.
Looking for a general dentist in Rockaway Beach who can help you maintain good oral health long-term? We’d love to help. Give us a call at (718) 945-9500 to schedule your first appointment. We offer a $99 special for new patients who need an exam, X-rays, and cleaning (in the absence of gum disease).
