What is a Pulpotomy?

A pulpotomy is a dental procedure primarily performed on children to save a tooth that has decayed or become infected. It is a conservative treatment that involves the partial removal of the diseased pulp tissue from the crown portion of the tooth while preserving the healthy pulp tissue in the root canal. This procedure is aimed at preventing the spread of infection and maintaining the vitality of the tooth.

The Pulpotomy Procedure

Arverne Dental understands that the dental health of your child is paramount. Our pulpotomy procedure is designed to provide the most comfortable treatment for your child while ensuring maximum effectiveness. The following is a step-by-step guide to the procedure:

  • Diagnosis

Initial Assessment: The process of pulpotomy begins with an accurate diagnosis.

    • Clinical Exam: Dr. Lyuba Taft examines the affected tooth of your child, looking for signs of decay or infection.
    • Digital X-Rays: Our digital x-ray system is a high-resolution imaging device with minimal radiation. We can then determine the extent and health of the tooth’s root structure.

After this thorough assessment, Dr. Taft will accurately diagnose your condition and determine whether a pulpotomy would be the best course of action.

  • Anesthesia

Local Anesthesia: We are committed to your child's safety and comfort. A painless procedure will be performed.

    • Topical Anesthetic Gel: Before injecting local anesthesia, the gums are numbed with a topical anesthetic. This reduces the pain of the injection.
    • Local Anesthesia Injection: An injection is administered to numb the area affected so that your child does not feel any pain during the procedure.
  • Decay Removal

Caries removal: After the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Taft removes the decayed part of the tooth with specialized dental tools.

Gentle approach: We use gentle techniques that minimize the impact on the healthy tooth structure and ensure the surrounding areas are intact.

  • Pulp Removal

Access to the Pulp Chamber: After removing the decay, the pulp chamber can be accessed to identify and remove the infected material.

    • Partial Pulp Removal: only the infected part of the pulp will be removed, leaving the healthy portion intact.
    • Thorough Cleaning: The pulp is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly to prevent infection.
  • Medication Applications

Therapeutic Medicine: The remaining pulp tissue is treated with therapeutic medicine to promote healing and prevent further infection.

    • Mineral Trioxide (MTA) or Formocresol: Depending on your child’s needs, you may apply a medicated powder like mineral trioxide (MTA) or formocresol.
    • Healing Promo: This medication is an antibacterial and promotes healing of the pulp tissue.
  • Restoration

Sealing & Restoration: After applying the medication, the tooth must be sealed and restored to full functionality.

    • Temporary filling: Initially, a temporary filling material can be used to cover the medicated chamber.
    • Stainless Steel Crown: In the majority of cases, a prefabricated stainless steel crown is placed on top of the treated tooth. This crown offers:
    • Strength & Durability: Protects remaining tooth structure against further decay and damage.
    • Functional Rehabilitation: This ensures that your child can chew and talk normally.
    • Tooth-Colored Filling (Alternative): You can use a tooth-colored filling instead of a dental crown for certain front teeth.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • Is a Pulpotomy Painful?

If you're wondering whether a pulpotomy is painful or not, rest assured that the procedure is done under local anesthesia to ensure that your child has a pain-free experience.

  • How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The average pulpotomy procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes, so it isn't an overly lengthy appointment. Regarding after-care, it's worth noting that, most often, a crown made of stainless steel is recommended to protect the tooth following the procedure. This is because the tooth may become weaker and more vulnerable to damage, and a crown can help keep it strong and healthy.

  • Is it Safe for Children?

If you're curious whether this procedure is safe for children, yes. A pulpotomy is a safe and effective way to maintain children’s dental health and can help prevent further complications.
