What is Root Planing and Scaling?

The non-surgical scaling and root planing procedure treats periodontal disease (gum disease). This procedure involves removing tartar and plaque from beneath the gum line and smoothing out the tooth roots to promote healing and reattachment of the gums. This procedure is vital for maintaining oral health and preventing gum disease.

Why is Scaling and Root Planing Necessary?

Periodontitis is a gum disease that occurs when bacteria and plaque build up below the gumline. This leads to inflammation, bone loss, and gum recession. Untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other complications. Scaling and root planing are essential to manage gum disease and prevent its progression.

  • Remove Plaque and Tartar:

Over the course of time, plaque and tartar may accumulate on teeth and under the gumline. Scaling and root planing thoroughly clean the teeth and gum pocket, eliminating bacteria and plaque buildup, which contributes to gum disease. The procedure removes these deposits and helps create a healthier mouth environment.

  • Reducing Gum Inflammation:

Inflammation is one of the hallmarks of gum disease, leading to red, swollen, and bleeding gums. By reducing swelling, inflammation, and bleeding, scaling and root planing can promote healthier gums. By removing the irritants that are causing inflammation, the gums will begin to heal. This will result in an improvement in the appearance and health of the gums.

  • Preventing Bone Loss:

Periodontitis may cause significant bone loss around your teeth, weakening structures that keep them in place. Unchecked bone loss can cause loose teeth and, eventually, tooth loss. Scaling and root planing can help prevent further bone loss by stabilizing gum tissue and decreasing the depth of the periodontal pocket. This procedure maintains a healthy bone structure around your tooth.

  • Promote Gum Reattachment:

With advanced gum disease, the gums pull apart from the teeth, creating deep pockets of periodontal bacteria. The root planing process smoothes out the rough spots on the roots of the teeth where bacteria can accumulate. This allows the gum tissue and bone to heal properly. This reattachment decreases the depth of pockets and offers better protection for tooth roots.

  • Preventing Tooth Loss:

Gum diseases are a major cause of adult tooth loss. The condition can progress and eventually lead to tooth loss. Scaling and root planing can reduce the risk of tooth decay by treating gum disease as early as possible. This procedure preserves your natural teeth while maintaining your oral health.

  • Improving Oral Health:

Gum diseases have been linked to systemic issues such as heart disease, respiratory infections, and diabetes. Scaling and root planing can help you improve your gum health, as well as your overall well-being. A healthier mouth reduces the risk of other health complications.

  • Enhancing Other Periodontal Treatments:

Scaling and root planing are often the first steps in treating gum disease, followed by other periodontal treatments like gum grafts or pocket reduction surgery. This procedure improves the results of other treatments by thoroughly cleaning the pockets and roots of the teeth.

Scaling and Root Planing Process

  • Initial Examination:

Dr. Lyuba I.Taft will perform a comprehensive oral exam to determine the extent and health of gum disease. This exam includes:

    • Digital X-rays: These digital X-rays show the structure of the bones and can help determine any bone loss surrounding the teeth.
    • Periodontal Probe: This small instrument measures the depth between the gums and your teeth of periodontal pockets. Gum disease is often indicated by pockets deeper than 3 millimeters.

Dr. Taft will use this information to determine the severity of your illness and develop a treatment plan tailored to you.

  • Local Anesthesia:

A local anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure. This will ensure that you are pain-free during the root planing and scaling. Patients with dental anxiety may be able to benefit from sedation.

  • Scaling:

The process of scaling involves removing tartar and plaque (hardened plaque) from beneath the gumline. Ultrasonic scalers or curettes are used as special dental instruments to remove and break down these deposits. This procedure thoroughly cleans the teeth and periodontal pockets and reduces bacteria and inflammation.

  • Root Planing

Root planing smoothes out the rough surfaces on the root of the teeth where bacteria can accumulate. The gums will be encouraged to attach more securely to the roots of the teeth by removing the rough surfaces. This encourages healthier gums, reduces the periodontal pocket depth, and helps to prevent further gum disease progression.

  • Post-Treatment Care:

Dr. Taft will provide you with personalized oral hygiene instructions after scaling and root planning to maintain healthy gums. These instructions usually include the following:

    • Brushing Techniques: Use fluoride toothpaste and a toothbrush with soft bristles to brush effectively.
    • Guidelines for Flossing: Daily flossing to remove plaque from between teeth and along the gum line.
    • Antimicrobial Rinse: Rinsing your mouth with antimicrobial rinse to reduce bacteria levels.
    • Dietary recommendations: Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals to maintain gum health.
  • Follow-Up Visits:

Dr. Taft will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing optimally and monitor your progress. During these appointments, Dr. Taft will check the depth of the periodontal pocket to ensure that the gums have reattached properly and inflammation has been reduced. Periodontal maintenance cleanings can be recommended to prevent the return of gum disease.
