What constitutes needing urgent care for a dental emergency?

Any dental issue or oral health problems requiring immediate care to prevent a lost tooth, relieve severe pain, or address injuries to the soft tissues in your mouth is considered a dental emergency and requires urgent care. If you experience any of the following, call the office to determine your next steps:

  • Severe Toothache

Are you suffering from an extreme toothache? Do you experience extreme, terrorizing tooth pain? If you are experiencing intense and excruciating tooth pain that won't go away on its own or worsens over time, Dr. Lyuba Taft and her team can assess the source of discomfort before providing treatments designed to address it effectively and address underlying problems that could be causing it.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth can be one of the most urgent dental emergencies, yet with proper handling and timely attention, it may still be reinserted and saved. If possible, place the tooth in milk or saline immediately or attempt to place it back into its socket before immediately making your way to Arverne Dental for the best chance of saving it.

  • Broken or Chipped Teeth

An accident, sports injury, or biting into something hard can leave a broken or chipped tooth vulnerable to infection and discomfort. However, quick intervention can restore structure and function and avoid further complications.

  • Loose or Dislodged Tooth:

A loose or dislodged tooth could indicate injury or advanced gum disease and requires immediate evaluation in adults to prevent tooth loss. Dr. Taft can assess the state of the tooth and any surrounding tissue to guide the appropriate course of action.

  • Abscess or Swelling

An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by an infection that forms in either your teeth or gums, often manifesting itself with pain, swelling, and fever. Left untreated, an abscess can spread throughout the body and pose serious health risks; emergency treatment must therefore be sought immediately to drain out and drain out the abscess before infection spreads further posing severe health risks.

  • Bleeding Gums or Soft Tissue Injury

Soft tissue injuries to your mouth—such as your gums, tongue, or cheeks—can occur as a result of accidents or trauma. If uncontrolled bleeding ensues following such incidents, seek care immediately; persistent gum bleeding could indicate advanced gum disease that needs prompt intervention to avoid further damage to oral structures.

  • Lost or Damaged Dental Restorations

If you've recently lost or damaged one or more dental restorations—such as crowns, fillings, or inlays—your teeth may become vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, or infection. While replacing or repairing them quickly may seem less urgent, it's still wise to have the restoration replaced immediately to avoid additional complications.

What to do in a Dental Emergency

It's important to act immediately if you have any of these symptoms. In the event of an emergency dental situation, here are some steps you can take:

  • Remain Calm: It’s important to remain calm in stressful situations. Panicking can make the situation worse. Focus on taking slow, deep breaths to help you stay calm and clear-headed. Don't hesitate to seek help from someone you trust or a professional who can provide support and guidance.

  • Call Arverne Dental: Contact us immediately and explain your emergency. If necessary, we'll book you an appointment for the same day and give you instructions on what to expect in between.

  • Reduce Pain and Swelling: When experiencing discomfort, it may be helpful to utilize over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to manage pain and reduce swelling. Applying cold compresses to the affected area can also help alleviate discomfort. Additionally, gargling with salt water may relieve throat or mouth pain. It's important to note that aspirin should be avoided as it can increase the risk of bleeding. These measures can offer temporary relief while waiting to seek medical attention.

  • Handle the Tooth Carefully: After you have knocked out a tooth or chipped it, gently rinse it in water by picking it up at the crown. Place it back into the socket if possible, or store it in milk until you get to our office.
